Though the exact prevalence of COPD in India is not clear, a recently conducted study on Epidemiology of Asthma, Respiratory Symptoms and Chronic Bronchitis in Adults (INSEARECH) found that 3.49% of adults over the age of 35 in the country suffered from lung diseases. "The study was conducted on 85,105 men and 84,470 women and estimates the number of COPD patients in the country to be around 14.84 million," stated the study published in the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health.

While the increasing prevalence of chronic bronchitis and lung diseases in Coimbatore does not surprises doctors, the delay in seeking treatment alarms them.
