How to choose an Asthma Specialist

If you or your loved one have recently been diagnosed with Asthma then it is important to consult with an Asthma Specialist who will recommend the best line of treatment. Because Asthma is not permanently curable, it is important to find the right doctor or doctors to help treat the condition and retain optimum quality of life.

An Asthma Specialist could refer to a wide range of doctors who specialise in treating Asthma and other related lung disorders. Here are some of the specialists you might need to refer to during the course of your treatment.

Allergist
An Allergist is a doctor who has additional training in immunology and treating allergies. An allergist is ideal for regular allergies and allergic asthma. It is always good to consult an allergist before treatment so that you identify or rule out any allergies you may or may not have.

Internist
A doctor who specialises in internal medicine and the study of diseases in the internal organs is known as an internist.

Pulmonologist
A doctor with further training in respiratory diseases is known as a pulmonologist. As the name suggests, a pulmonologist specialises in the health of the pulmonary system.

Depending on the age of the patient, you may also need to consult with a Paediatrician with regularity.  A Paediatrician is a doctor who specialises in treating children. They can also have further specialisations in pulmonology or immunology.

Choosing an Asthma Specialist is not something to take lightly. You need to take a careful decision as whoever you choose will likely be treating the patient for the foreseeable future. There are a number of factors to pay attention to when evaluating your options.

  1. Consider your doctors certifications beyond the MBBS. Ensure you have a board certified doctor.
  2. Where does your doctor practice? Make sure the doctor practices somewhere close to your residence so that you can reach him or her quickly in case of an emergency.
  3. Is the doctor recommended by someone? Sometimes it is good to check your personal network about how good a doctor is. If you know someone who is happy and satisfied with the doctor you are considering then it re-enforces your decision positively.
  4. Make sure you check your doctor’s cost as well. If he or she charges more than you can afford you will always be hesitant to visit the doctor even when you need to.
  5. Is it easy to get appointments? There is no point choosing a doctor who only has appointments available a few weeks in advance. This can interfere with the level of care he or she is able to provide.
  6. It might also be a good idea to check with your regular Physician for a reference or recommendation. This will help you making a smarter choice in the long run.

Once you have considered each of these points carefully, schedule a preliminary visit. Above all other factors, the most important is the patient should feel absolutely comfortable with the Asthma Specialist. If for whatever reason the patient does not feel at ease with the doctor then begin looking for alternatives at once. Sometimes it can take time to find the right doctors but with a little perseverance and thoughtful consideration you can find great asthma specialists who will treat the condition with the all the necessary expertise.
