How to Use a Rotahaler: Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these simple steps to ensure you get your full dose of medication effectively.

Preparing the Device:

  1. Insert the Capsule: Hold the Rotahaler and insert a Rotacap into the square-shaped Rotacap hole, making sure the transparent end of the capsule faces down.
  2. Rotate to Pierce: Hold the mouthpiece firmly with one hand and rotate the base of the device as far as it will go. This action will pierce the capsule, releasing the powder for inhalation. You will be able to see the separated capsule through the transparent body of the inhaler.

Taking Your Dose:

  • Breathe Out: Sit or stand upright. Breathe out fully and completely, turning your head away from the device.
  • Position the Inhaler: Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips tightly around it to create a seal.
  • Inhale deeply: Tilt your head slightly backward and breathe in rapidly and deeply through your mouth. This strong inhalation will pull the powder from the capsule into your lungs.
  • Hold Your Breath: Remove the Rotahaler from your mouth and hold your breath for at least 10 seconds, or for as long as you comfortably can.
  • Breathe Out Slowly: Exhale slowly and gently.
  • Check the Capsule: After your dose, open the device to see if any powder is left in the capsule. If there is, repeat steps 3-7 to inhale the remaining medication.

Points to remember

  • Rinse Your Mouth: After taking your full dose, always rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and then spit it out. Do not swallow the water. This helps reduce the risk of side effects like oral thrush.
  • Cleaning Your Rotahaler: Clean the device at least once a week. Separate the two halves, rinse them under clean running water, shake out any excess water, and allow them to air-dry completely before reassembling.
  • Device Replacement: It is recommended to replace your Rotahaler with a new one every six months to ensure it continues to function correctly.
  • Storing: Always store your Rotahaler in a clean, dry place.
