How to Use a Ciphaler: Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these three easy steps to ensure you use your Ciphaler correctly every time.
- Open: Hold the Ciphaler in one hand. Place the thumb of your other hand on the thumb grip and slide it open as far as it goes until you hear a "click." This exposes the mouthpiece.
- Load: With the mouthpiece facing you, hold the Ciphaler in a horizontal position. Slide the lever away from you as far as it will go until you hear another "click." This loads a dose of the medication. Do not play with the lever, as this can waste doses.
Taking Your Dose:
- Before inhaling, breathe out fully, turning your head away from the device. Never breathe out into the Ciphaler mouthpiece.
- Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips tightly around it.
- Keeping your head straight and body upright, inhale quickly and deeply through your mouth.
- Remove the Ciphaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortable.
- Breathe out normally.
Finishing Up
- Close: To close the Ciphaler, slide the thumb grip back towards you until it clicks shut. This readies the device for your next dose.
- Rinse: After taking your dose, always rinse your mouth with water and then spit it out. Do not swallow the water.
Points to remember
- Dose Counter: The Ciphaler has a dose counter that shows the number of doses remaining. Each time you load a dose by sliding the lever, the counter will decrease by one. The numbers will appear in red for the last five doses to remind you to get a new device. When the counter shows '00', the device should be discarded.
- Storage and Cleaning: The Ciphaler should always be kept dry. Never wash it with water. You can clean the outside of the mouthpiece with a dry cloth or tissue. Store it safely away from moisture and at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
- Safety: Keep the device out of the reach of children. Do not attempt to take the Ciphaler apart. Always use the device in a horizontal position as shown in the video.
