How to Use a Nebulizer

Struggling to use your nebulizer? This easy, step-by-step guide from Breathefree will teach you everything you need to know about how to use a nebulizer correctly, from initial setup and medication use to proper cleaning and maintenance.

Inhaler

Nebulizers

Unlike pMDIs and DPIs, nebulizers convert the liquid medication into suitable aerosol droplets, which are best suited for inhalation. Nebulizers do not require coordination and deliver the medication quickly and effectively to the lungs in the form of a mist. Nebulizers are preferred during asthma attacks, in infants, children, the elderly, critical, unconscious patients, and those who cannot use a pMDI or DPI effectively.

About the Instructional Video

This video provides a detailed guide on the Good Nebulization Practices, covering the entire process from setup to cleaning. By watching, you will learn about the three key stages of using a nebulizer:

  • Disinfecting: How to properly disinfect the nebulizer parts before every use to ensure hygiene.
  • Using the Nebulizer: A step-by-step walkthrough of how to assemble the device, add the medication, and correctly perform the inhalation treatment.
  • Maintenance: Essential tips for cleaning and maintaining your nebulizer after use to keep it in optimal working condition.

The video also covers which patient interfaces to use (adult mask, pediatric mask, or mouthpiece) and provides critical safety instructions.

How to Use a Nebulizer: Step-by-Step Guide

The process of using a nebulizer involves careful preparation, correct administration of the medicine, and proper after-care.

Preparation and Setup:

  1. Wash Your Hands: Always begin by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Place the Compressor: Set the nebulizer compressor on a flat, sturdy surface.
  3. Connect to Power: Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
  4. Prepare the Medication: Open the medication chamber and place the baffle inside. Add the prescribed amount of medicine into the chamber. The total solution should not exceed 5 ml. Re-attach the cap securely.
  5. Connect Tubing: Attach one end of the tubing to the air outlet on the compressor and the other end to the bottom of the medication chamber.
  6. Attach Interface: Attach the appropriate interface (mouthpiece, adult mask, or pediatric mask) to the top of the medication chamber.

Taking the Treatment:

  1. Turn on the Compressor: Switch on the power button. You should see a fine mist coming from the mask or mouthpiece.
  2. Breathe Correctly with a Mask: Place the mask securely over the nose and mouth, ensuring a snug fit. Breathe normally throughout the treatment.
  3. Breathe Correctly with a Mouthpiece: Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and seal your lips around it. Breathe in and out slowly through your mouth.
  4. Continue Treatment: Continue inhaling the mist until the sputtering sound begins, which indicates that the medication is almost finished. The treatment typically lasts for about 5-10 minutes.
  5. Turn Off the Machine: Once the treatment is complete, switch off the compressor.

Points to remember

  • Hygiene is Key: Always disinfect the nebulizer parts (except the tubing) before the first use and after every treatment to prevent infections. You can soak them in a mild disinfectant or a vinegar solution.
  • Positioning: Sit upright in a comfortable position during the treatment to allow your lungs to expand fully.
  • Safety Precautions: Do not talk during nebulization. Keep the mist away from your eyes. After the treatment, wash your face and gargle with water to clear any remaining medication.
  • Maintenance: Change the nebulizer's filter when it becomes discolored. Regularly wipe the outside of the compressor with a clean cloth. After each use, disconnect the tubing and wash the medication chamber and mask/mouthpiece as per instructions.
