What is Bronchitis?

A nagging cough with mucus (phlegm) and breathing difficulty are indicative of bronchitis. The problem begins when the upper airways in the lungs, known as bronchial tubes are infected or irritated and swollen. This makes it difficult for air to flow in and out of the tubes, therefore causing difficulty in breathing. Bronchitis is nothing to worry about it is treatable after the right diagnosis. Some of the common causes of bronchitis are bacteria, virus, irritants, smoke, and chemicals.

The right diagnosis and treatment can cure bronchitis

Broadly, there are two types of bronchitis –

Acute bronchitis - This is more common, caused by infections – viral or bacterial. Some of the symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat and wheezing, amongst others. It usually lasts for a few weeks, but usually does not cause any problem afterwards.

Chronic bronchitis - This is a little more serious than acute bronchitis. This type of bronchitis is usually recurring or stays for a long time. It is suggestive of other lung problems, such as COPD. The main symptoms are cough and breathing problems that may have lasted for months or years. Smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. The important thing to remember is that bronchitis is treatable.
